e-Waste Not, i Want Not!

Ever wonder what happens to your old monitor, computers, radio's etc.  Check out this video at PBS http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/ghana804/video/video_index.html or CLICK HERE. This video showcases one of the largest dumping grounds for e-waste in one of Ghana's largest cities.  What's further amazing was as they show this wasteland of computer parts, take a look at the amount of recycle bags of ink cartridges and so forth.  I know I have thought I was being responsible and recycled some of these items and simply eliminated it from my conscience.  As soon as you watch this video, that perspective will forever change. If anything the problem of e-waste was just a matter of time.  The life of a cell phone before it is too huge to be stylish is about 2 years.  Most people get a new computer every 3 years and push their old one to a corner until it is so obsolete it has no use whatsoever.  Then off to the dump or Goodwill it goes. Perhaps knowledge of E-waste builds the case for online applications over client side applications.  Instead of continually purchase more RAM, more Hard Drive space, more CPU power, more, more, maybe we should explore something to the effect of an Internet dumb terminal that just provides access to your stored info online.  Privacy can be a concern, but if we move towards leased space as opposed to licensed content management providers then we the people have the empowerment with less impact to our environment. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to figure out what to do with this CRT monitor in the corner of my basement and still be able to sleep at night.  I think I'll just use it.
