I felt like the AC/DC anthem "Back in Black" should play as I downloaded the latest version of Firefox. The fact is after loading and trying it out, the changes are somewhat subtle except for one thing. IT IS FAST!! Mozilla has put in a new javascript engine called TraceMonkey. I ran this through a few paces on the TOPSweb project internal site which runs web2project. This uses a lot of AJAX features and I was really pleased with the speed of Firefox. The load time seemed to be next to nothing. Firefox is now supporting HTML 5.0 and CSS 2.1. What this means to the end user, is you'll look at a page and say, that looks nice. But to the developer, this is just awesome. You don't need to embed plugins to drop a video or audio into the page, you can just call on tags as if you were going to bold text such as <video> </video>. Firefox now supports open video formats as well such as OGG Vorbis. If you are not familiar with OGG you should be, it provides a much higher quality sound and video and lower bit rates, far better than MP3. Just as IE8 had come out with Private Browsing, Firefox has added that feature as well. They have also added the alternative by giving a feature called 'Location Aware Browsing'. Location Aware Browsing can tell a website the location of the user and then cater results based on your geographic location. The new FireFox gets an A in my book and is worth the upgrade. If you, like me, have dozens of add-ons, it is still best to wait at this time. I'm sure in another couple of weeks the more popular add-ons should be updated.
